Watanabe Toru

Basic Info:

Player: TeslaTornado

Position: "Force Multiplier" (CQC expert, munitions specialist, intimidation tactics and psychological warfare expert)

Demeanor: "The mountains are dead stone, the people
Admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness,
The mountains are not softened nor troubled
And a few dead men's thoughts have the same temper."

- Robinson Jeffers, "Wise Men In Their Bad Hours"

Nature: A man whose head is laid out like a factory blueprint; chambers for heart and head, separating emotion from cold logic. He gets things done, saves the questioning of morals and personal feelings for when God calls him away from this earth. He's disposable, and his lack of regard for his own well-being both on and off the battlefield reflect this knowledge. He has abandoned his past and closed his eyes to the future, and lives only in the fleeting, passing moment that is the present.

You have twelve points to distribute among as many or as few specialty skills as you see fit (but at least three is almost always warranted). Remember to explain what each specialty entails.

  • Against The Tide: 4. [Flavor Text]

- Using this special braces Toru in a stationary position
- Grants additional PDEF/STR against melee attacks or grappling attempts, and additional Ranged when using his knee-mortar or an equivalent weapon that must be fired from a braced position (light machine guns, anti-materiel rifles, etc.)
- Successful PDEF checks versus opponents using Melee attacks can trigger a Melee counterattack
- Cannot roll AGI-based defensive rolls when braced
- Moving, dodging using AGI, or being forced off balance ends this ability
- Cannot be used in combination with Full Force Forward

  • Full Force Forward: 4. [Flavor Text]

- Provides a +2 bonus to STR/Melee when charging an opponent or object at close range
- While moving, gains +2 bonus to AGI-based dodge checks
- Cannot use ranged weapons when charging; only melee weapons or fists
- PDEF is halved when charging
- Failing a PDEF roll when charging causes stagger, imposing a 50% penalty to AGI/PDEF checks for the next combat round
- Cannot be used in combination with Against The Tide

  • Deep Breaths And Little Boxes: 2. [Flavor Text]

- Sacrifice one point of MHealth to gain one temporary point of PHealth, can be performed twice per run
- Cannot gain temporary PHealth without having taken damage from an external source (Cannot use skill at full health)
- Cannot use skill when at or below 3 MHealth
- Does not affect death/knockout mechanics (Reaching 0 HP = penalty and/or death)
- Temporary PHealth is removed after combat is resolved (Death/penalty mechanics apply as normal if Toru reaches 0 HP in this way)

  • Why Fight Fair When You Can Fight Pragmatic: 2. [Flavor Text]

- Roll 1d6 to determine number of munitions created; dice rolls can be divided between different munitions
- Toru cannot carry more than 6 Special Munitions into the field at any given point in time
- Roll 4df+2 to determine combat effectiveness of rounds.

-2 Critical failure, renders all munitions useless, forcing Toru to use a different weapon at a -1 Ranged penalty for the duration of the run/event.
-1 to 0 Round creation fails, yields no ammunition.
1 to 3 Round has desired effect with no additional bonuses.
4 to 5 Round has an additional +2 to damage in addition to desired effect.
6 Critical success, +2 to Special Munition damage and +1 to non-Special Munition attacks with mortar.
Ammunition types listed here:
Munition Name Munition Effect
Canister Shot A close-range mixed munition type made of a nasty combination of ball bearings, nails, broken glass and metal shards tightly packed within a sealed tin can, one end of which is affixed to a cordite charge. Detonating the charge fires the canister from the mortar's barrel; the canister then detonates, spraying a barrage of small, sharp projectiles at the target and those in its vicinity. Highly lethal against soft targets, it loses its effectiveness against enemies that are protected against shrapnel. +2 Ranged damage versus unarmored opponents, may cause bleeding. No damage bonus against unarmored opponents.
Flechette Round Similar to canister shot, flechette rounds are thin steel spikes that are bound together and encased in a sabot intended to split apart when exiting the barrel of the mortar. The spikes are designed to pierce and shred enemy armor, reducing its effectiveness in addition to causing grievous flesh wounds. Successful attacks with flechette rounds reduce enemy PDEF by 2.
Smoke Round Similar in design to the Type-89's normal fragmentation rounds, smoke rounds expel a cloud of obscuring white smoke at the area of detonation, reducing battlefield visibility to those in the cloud's vicinity. Enemies and allies within the cloud suffer a -2 penalty to visual- or scent-based PERC checks when spotting others, as well as Ranged attacks. Does not affect other senses.

- Toru can also use XP to perform research projects in order to develop different types of Special Munitions with different effects. These are treated as normal research projects and fall under the same restrictions as other Special Munitions unless otherwise specified in their description.
