Personal History:

Ultan was born in 1958 in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland. His home life was largely unremarkable, but he was influenced by news of the distant seeming Troubles and his yet more distant parents. He spent much of his summers with distant relatives in the Mayo Gaeltacht, leaving him fluent in Irish and hard-working from continuous farm and fishing work during his alleged holidays. Upon leaving secondary school, he decided to join the Irish Army in hopes of doing something about the Troubles.

Joining the Irish Army in 1976 as an infantryman, he was assigned to the 27th Infantry Battalion, based in Aiken Barracks in Dundalk. Letters from his family were rare and soon stopped altogether. Despite frequent border duty, he saw no action, mostly checking that people coming up the main road seemed like they weren't smugglers. In mid 1979 he was promoted to corporal/ceannaire, leading a section (Squad). He was eventually deployed, in 1979, to the Lebanon as part of the UN force there. He served his six months there with no combat action, but picked up a little Arabic.

In 1980 he rotated back from Lebanon to the news that he was eligible to attempt to join the newly formed elite unit of Ireland - the Army Ranger Wing. He applied and spent the next 10 months in grueling selection and training. Soon after he finished his initial parachute training as part of the elite unit he was summoned to G2, and assigned to work with the Foundation as part of an exchange for their assisstance to Ireland in events he was not cleared to know about. He was quickly assigned to Psi-7.
