Cha Tae-Kyeong was born on 1928 in Northern Korea to a family of farmers who were greatly effected by the occupation of Korea by the Japanese. At the age of 12, she witnessed her family being executed and would've nearly been executed herself if it weren't for the intervention of an underground resistance movement. It was at this age she was trained to become a soldier, and aid the resistance in taking back their country.
Seven years later, when the Northern part of Korea was liberated by the Soviets, Kayla found herself happy that the Japanese had finally been driven out, but disappointed that her country was split by the United States. She saw the Communist leaders as a uniting force for Korea, and the Capitalists as the only obstacle in the final reunification of her country. When the Korean war started, Kayla was more than happy to rejoin the guerrilla forces in fighting for what she believed was for the good of all Korea.
She later become disillusioned when she realized she was fighting more Koreans than Americans, and soon realized that both governments were sending her countrymen to the grave not for their country, but for ideological beliefs. Disgusted, she defected from the military in 1952 and snuck aboard the next boat to Japan.
It was at this point in her life she chose to live a nomadic lifestyle, free from violence. One day, however, while on the road she witnessed a farmer being attacked by a strange 9-headed bird. Killing it, she believed she discovered her purpose was to protect others from harm. She worked as a vigilante for a while, avenging deaths and hunting down those who evaded the law, such as war criminals. She lived off the land, moving from place to place all across Asia, trying to find peace within herself.
Eventually, the Foundation caught up with her, and offered her a job protecting the world. To this request, she agreed wholeheartedly.
