Personal History:

Samual "Oz" Oswald was born was born in 1920 in Chicago to a WWI vet and a waitress. Growing up, he received a candid view of his fathers experiences during the war, both good and bad. His family was fairly well off, but the Great Depression was a hard blow for them. When old enough, Samuel began working at a local hardware store. Not having enough money to pay for college, he drifted between jobs until 1941, where he joined the army as a commissioned officer, and usually filled the role of marksman.

In 1944, he was deployed in one of the only trenches of the war, a particularly large muddy/soft patch of land where tanks proved to be useless. While there he heard rumors of something strange happened in far off corners of the trenches: small holes forming in the bottom of trenches that lead into a dark abyss, the occasional unaccounted solder, and a sweet-foul stench pervading the air. A week later, men began to go missing, quickly. A foul-smelling mist had overtaken the battlefield. Something began haunting the trenches, darting quickly out of view. Sam, along with a handful of ally survivors, lead a desperate last-ditch attempt to leave the area, ultimately leading to the loss of half of the group and the bombing of whole battlefield, after they had relayed the information to command.

After the war, Sam went to college to study to be a historian, with a side project of finding out what happened in those trenches. He began collecting stories are reports of the paranormal from fellow veterans, researching the myths and legends of Europe. This eventually got the foundation’s attention.
