Riikka Jokinen

Player: TheSpookanist

Position: Battlefield Controller

Demeanor: Riikka is friendly enough, and not exactly serious most of the time, but still approaches most things with a certain strictness and, honestly, can be an asshole about certain things.

Nature: In spite of her friendliness, Riikka is quite often easy to see as callous. Though she does care for others - quite deeply, at that - she has little patience for people who act in ways other than how she thinks they should. This can be as extreme as her complete lack of regard for her enemies on the battlefield, or as subtle as openly questioning a friend's choices. She also suffers from a chronic lack of ability to apologise for nearly anything she does.

Description: "Big" is usually the first word people use to describe Riikka. She's about six foot two with at least two hundred pounds of muscle on her, a smoothly angled head topped by messy, straight black hair that covers her ears. The skin of her face is interrupted by two strikingly blue eyes. Her muscles are extremely well defined all over her body, and usually bound by cargo pants, combat boots, and a tank top. She wears her knife on her thigh when on Site.

Specialties
  • Perfect Execution: 4. Riikka's best work is done when she has room to breathe. If Riikka hasn't been damaged since her last turn, she gains a +1 bonus to all her attack rolls. If that condition is met and there are no enemies within melee range, she instead gains a +2 bonus. If both previous conditions are met and she hasn't been attacked since her last turn, she increases her bonus by a cumulative +1 per turn until one of Perfect Execution's conditions fails to be met.
  • They Can't Stop Me: 3. When it comes to keeping the enemy in their place, nothing's better than a really big gun. If she has a heavy weapon set up, once after each turn (including the turn where she sets her weapon up) she can fire on an enemy attempting to move if at any point this puts them in her line of fire; this attack is made at a -3 penalty, and if she moves from where she originally set up her ranged weapon, she must spend another turn in order to reactivate They Can't Stop Me.
  • Reckoning: 1. Whenever Riikka fires a ranged weapon on her turn, she gains one use of Reckoning until her next turn. When an enemy attacks an ally, Riikka can immediately fire on them with the same weapon, even if it's not her turn; this attack is made at a -3 penalty.

Personal History:

Born into wartime Finland on the eastern front, it wasn't long before Riikka was given up to an orphanage in Helsinki. Times were harsh, uncertain politically and logistically. Crime was always a part of Riikka's life, her home shaken down by less sympathetic thugs being her earliest clear memory. She never did much about it, though, until the age of fifteen; she was working a part time job at a bar, cleaning glasses and tables, and found herself in a familiar situation. Faced down with armed members of a gang, being screamed at for money that she was never made privy to the location of, being offered a choice: give them the money, or die. Or…

Gangs aren't notoriously well-trained, typically, and fuelled with the adrenaline of survival there were a few minutes of broken glass, bloodied silverware, split lips, gouged eyeballs. Some of those were on her, but not nearly as many as on them. She threw down her blood-soaked apron and ran, disappearing into the alleyways and shacks on the outskirts of the city. She became a thief, briefly, for a pistol from the local armoury, the war long since done, and then she became something different: a vigilante, fed up with being pushed around. The majority of basic thugs lacked any sort of weapon, and were easy to rob… or fight. She shook when she first pulled the trigger, and for the next dozen times, and on some of those nights, but the shaking stopped.

Riikka moved up. First it was fighting gangsters in alleyways, then it was scouting out their hideouts, then it was actively hunting down murderers and other high-profile criminals. Her arms grew, too, from pistols to automatic weapons, eventually either purchasing or looting the biggest guns she could find. Training every day, using an axe in the forest, building muscle off its swing and the weight of the logs. Did what good she could alongside the bad; the money that didn't go to feeding her or ammunition in shady deals that near always ended poorly for the seller occasionally wound up scattered on the office floor of a hospital, or a school, its finders always squinting at the small red flecks that weren't uncommon.

Eventually, though, she drew a lot of attention, as one would expect. It was time to stop. To pull off one last, great bang of a mission and run off with the money somewhere neither the authorities nor her enemies would ever find her. The mission - her first encounter with the anomalous, though she didn't know it - almost killed her, and she never spoke of it again. She took the valuables and left the bodies, all the many skeletons in her closet behind, and stowed away on a food delivery truck headed far, far north. Met a botanist studying the flowers there. Fell in love. Settled down. Had a daughter. Everything was peaceful, for once.

Impressively, two decades passed before fate caught up with Riikka. A second brush with the anomalous. The same beast she had slain, kept by a gang as a pet, able to appear in other locations on a whim, only this time there were dozens. The small town never stood a chance, only a few hundred scarcely armed people against an unknowable and lethal foe. Phone lines, along with their connection to the outside world, severed. But Riikka never forgot to train, out of sight of her family. Never forgot the floorboard she hid her old possessions under. Never forgot how to use them.

Though she didn't kill them all by her own hand, the Foundation still found her nonetheless impressive, smoking in a bar amidst a room scattered with the beasts' bodies, having dressed her own wounds, reloaded, and set to wait for more. Rather than let her talents go to waste, they offered her a position, and she agreed - on the condition that they search for her daughter. Despite their efforts, she was never found. Nor was her body, but others had gone missing as well, and a good few were found: face down in the snow miles from home. The prospects bleak, and with no other survivors, she reluctantly moved on.
