Professor Lyons

Basic Info:

Player: Daedalus
Position: Theoretical Thaumatology Researcher

Demeanor: Perpetually tired and frazzled, Sophia gives off the impression she'd rather be anywhere else than where she's currently standing at any given time. Despite this, she does her best to be kind and courteous when it counts, even when she's neck deep in paperwork.

Nature: Perpetually tired and frazzled, Sophia would rather be anywhere else than the Foundation. She maintains a love for the thaumaturgic sciences, and while her theoretical knowledge is hefty, she lacks any experience with it. A lack of experience she attempts to make up for with persistence.

Description: 5'4", tired-looking. Brown hair tied into a knot with green eyes behind a pair of horn-rimmed glasses. Usually wears a labcoat and carries around a clipboard.

Specialties

You have twelve points to distribute among as many or as few specialty skills as you see fit (but at least three is almost always warranted). Remember to explain what each specialty entails.

  • A Theoretical Degree in Thaumatology: 3. Ever since she was young, Sophia maintained a love of the science of thaumatology. She's read every book she could get her hands on, and has even written a few of her own. (+3 Academics to identification of magical phenomena)
  • Fond Memories: 3 Sophia's father enjoyed taking the whole family on camping trips, where he taught her how to hunt. He would've taught his son, but alas, Sophia wasn't a boy. (+3 Ranged with a rifle if taking the first shot. Bonus decays by -1 every turn until the bonus reaches 0. Resets every encounter.)
  • Knowledge Repository: 3 This woman's mind is so filled to the brim with useless trivia and facts that it's exceptionally difficult for anything to read or control her mind. (+3 Against psychic attacks, decays by -1 every use until the bonus reaches 0. Resets every run.)
  • Paper Pusher (Anomalous): 3 Sophia first discovered her connection to the written word at an early age, which is what originally sparked her interest in the supernatural. This ability manifests itself in different forms:
    • Information Retention: Sophia has the ability to instantly learn all the information contained within a single book or search for a specific piece of information depending on the roll. [Sophia can use this to learn information contained within a book without reading said book. The roll determines the quality and quantity of the information at the GM's discretion. A critfail or acefail nets no information and prevents the book from being affected by the anomaly, while a critwin divulges all information contained within the book]
    • Communication is Key: Sometimes a certain book isn't exactly in your native language, or in any discernable human language for that matter. It helps to have a connection to the written word as Sophia does. [She can use this ability to understand a language or symbols she usually couldn't. The roll determines the quality of the translation at the GM's discretion. A critfail or acefail provides no translation, whilst a critwin adds the language to the list below. A maximum of two languages can be learned this way, with any subsequent languages being forgotten.]
    • Paper Manipulation: With some effort, Sophia can animate small folded pieces of paper. This doesn't have much use beyond a novelty. [She can use this ability to animate single pieces of paper. A critfail causes the paper to catch fire. A critwin allows her to control a swarm of papers.]
  • Anomalous Disadvantage: Paper Thin Sophia's mind is much like a book with a limited number of pages; that is to say, if one thing goes in, another thing comes out. In the event of a critfail, Sophia loses -1 mhealth and -2 to all knowledge-based skills for the rest of the run. In the event of an acefail, Sophia loses -1 to all knowledge-based skills for the rest of the run. In the event of a critwin, she gains +1 to all knowledge-based skills on the next roll, whilst losing -1 Mhealth.

Personal History:

Sophia Lyons was born on March 3rd, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts to George and Martha Lyons. Her upbringing was a rather normal one, despite the fact Sophia discovered she could manipulate paper and read whole books simply by leaving them under her pillow at night. She was treated as a nerd and an outcast throughout her childhood, not one to socialize with the other children or life her head from a book long enough to pay them any mind.

As she continued through high school and eventually college, she grew curious about her abilities and dove into the studies of the supernatural and thoroughly unscientific, to try and find an answer that would satisfy her.

But life would not pause as she pursued this interest. She needed to find a job; so she began applying to several universities as a 'Thaumatology' professor, a brand new field of science she found was not well explored in the current curriculum. Unfortunately, she was laughed out of most institutions with this proposal; doubly so since she was a woman. In spite of this she soldiered on and eventually found an institution that would hire her as a mythology teacher.

She continued to study and write books in the meantime, publishing 'A Study On The Magical Influences of The Great Plains,' and 'The Identification of Magical Phenomena', both of which were universally acclaimed as fantastic works of fiction, much to Sophia's chagrin.

Eventually, Sophia's chance to experience the reality of magic came true one day, when she was approached by an agent representing a certain organization who offered her a job studying the real deal…
