Niall Callahan
Niall Callahan

Player: Paeniteo Azrael

Position: Combat Medic

Demeanor: Friendly and down to earth, Niall is the epitome of Midwest charm. He's particularly attentive to other people's emotions, and enjoys predicting their needs. He has a self deprecating style of humor that can occasionally turn into frustration. He is reticent to talk about himself and his past, though he's found that people at the foundation all seem to have similarly traumatic histories.

Nature: Alone with someone he cares about, Niall is quiet and reserved. He keeps his own feelings close to his chest, and tries not to let people in, but after the walls come down he's more forthright and vulnerable. He's extremely protective of the people he cares about, and will even violate his own morals to keep them safe.

Description: Niall is tall and broad shouldered, with dirty blond hair that he keeps at chin length. He stands over six feet tall, and tends to wear simple, plain clothing - t-shirts, jeans, the occasional denim or leather jacket. He has strong a strong chin, and a masculine face, along with an athletic build.

You have eight points to distribute among as many or as few specialty skills as you see fit (but at least three is almost always warranted). Remember to explain what each specialty entails.

  • Field Medic: 3. Niall's time in Vietnam with special forces has given him a special gift for saving and stabilizing people on their last legs. (When treating a character that has less than 4 PHP, can expend one healing die from his medical pool to restore 3 PHP, rather than having to roll for it like normal).
  • * Cool Under Pressure: 3. From being a medic in Vietnam to firefighting, Niall has had to keep his cool under extreme circumstances. Small mistakes can lead to disaster. Due to his prior experiences, Niall can spend a turn focusing on re-centering himself in a stressful situation and rolling 1d4 to heal MHP. He can do this once per run, and this spends one healing die.
  • Marksmanship Expert: 2. Niall has extensive fighting experience with a variety of assault rifles and pistols, and routinely demonstrated his skill in a variety of different combat scenarios. As a result, when he is involved in active combat against humanoid entities who are equipped with a firearm, while Niall is equipped with a pistol or assault rifle, he receives a +2 when using Ranged to attack an enemy.

Personal History:

Report on Niall Callahan

Niall Callahan was born on Valentine’s Day, 1947 in Red Oak, Iowa. His parents, Jack and Donna, were high school sweethearts that married just before Jack went off to WWII. Niall had two other brothers, both younger than himself growing up, and his family life was fairly mundane. His father was an alcoholic who was abusive from time to time, but his mother was caring and nurturing, and did her best to raise her children well.

Niall’s performance in school was somewhat lack luster, though he performed very well in athletics. He was selected for his school’s varsity football team as a running back, and they ended up winning the state championship in his final year of school. According to Niall, he had plans to attend a local college, until an incident1 occurred that incited his father to extreme abuse, and Niall left home without a plan. He eventually ended up in Chicago, where with little money to his name and no place to call home, he joined the US Army.

He was trained as a Ranger Combat Medic and deployed in Vietnam until the end of the war, serving with his Ranger company in a variety of dangerous missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions that led to the rescue of a US Air Force helicopter crew trapped behind enemy lines. He was given high marks by his commanding officers and was eventually honorably discharged from the military shortly after the fall of Saigon. When pressed for more information, Niall responded that the discharge was a response to the lessened need of troops quote "like him."

A particularly interesting event during his time in Vietnam involved the inadvertent decommissioning of an anomalous entity at the bequest of the US high command. His unit was not informed of the true purpose of the mission, and the encounter led to the deaths of over half of the men in the squad. While all records relating to the incident were sealed and Niall mentions that he and the other survivors were ordered to never speak of it again, he was willing to share some details about the mission. He described the entity as an eyeless predator, larger than a tiger with iridescent fur and a separated jaw that allowed it to bite and consume objects far larger than its head. His unit was evacuated, and the carcass taken back for investigation.

After the war, Niall returned to Chicago where he worked a series of small jobs before being accepted by the Chicago Fire Department as a firefighter. From this point forward, Niall describes his life as relatively mundane, save for the incident which occurred last week before he was brought in for questioning as a potential recruit for the Foundation. Niall was reluctant to talk about the incident, but eventually shared that his squad was called to a building fire in a surprisingly large bookstore in Old Town. Upon arriving, there appeared to be people on the third floor, and he and two other firefighters ascended a ladder to rescue them. He then encountered an anomalous individual who seemed to be the source of the fire. His squadmates were killed, and he managed to ambush the individual before they noticed him.

Considering his previous experience both in the military and his encounters with anomalous entities, Niall was offered acceptance into the Foundation after explaining our purpose and his role in PSI-7, and entered training and orientation on January 15th, 1983.
