Jakob Barrett

Player: Krydderi

Position: Discordian Inventor [Epsilon-9]

Demeanor: Absolutely wild, Jake is loud and straight up chaotic. He's smart, but he'd give Eris a run for her money. Hyper, loud and ticking faster than his fuse on a Friday- expect some chaos in his wake. That, or some crazed invention. Depends on his mood.

Nature: Sharp as a razor and well aware of it- Jake's surprisingly in-tune with the Foundations ideals. He's snarky and a good inch away from throwing out a crack-shot plan at all times, but as the saying goes… If it ain't broke…

Description: To spare you some reading, he looks like this. Standing at 5'7, Jakob is a slightly tanned man with a lean build. He has a mess of drab, brown colored curly hair. Clean shaven with softer facial features, he happens to wear horn-rimmed glasses and button up shirts alongside jeans. He seems partial to drab, dingy colors such as rusty bronze. The man abhors lab coats but will waltz around in combat boots as if he owns the place. Jakey has almost bronze colored eyes, and he ticks when not speaking. He has a larger tattoo of interlocking gears spanning his arm in shades of bronze and brass

No matter how utterly horrific it is, no matter how battered you are, and no matter how painful it is to move- you can't back down. When your teams lives are in your hands, you can't relent.
    • Jakob can sacrifice mental health to remain conscious after heavy damage and/or to resist intimidation. For every turn Jakob applies Mechanical Drive, he sacrifices 2 MH. If he falls below 8 MH, he is rendered unconscious until properly healed (if heavy damage has occurred) and can no longer use Mechanical Drive.
  • Tinkers Tourniquet: 2. Medicine meets engineering! Sometimes, the bleeding is just too much. Other times, there isn't exactly a limb to treat. You have to stop the bleeding somehow before the bloke dies- so why not use some probably experimental mechanical genius?
    • 2 times per run, Jakob can employ specially designed (albeit clunky steampunk looking) tourniquets to stop heavy bleeding from massive injuries or limb loss. These do not heal a PC.
  • Clockwork CMI: 2. Problem solving just got an upgrade! Introducing the Clockwork Mobile Interface! Commonly called the CMI, it's a simple handheld interface for calculations. A calculator, work space, and generally useful note taker… The CMI allows for rudimentary calculations and notes to be stored for later use. Booting it up will light up the purple holographic display with a QWERTY keyboard.
    • +2 to logic rolls for solving numbers-based puzzles and mathematical calculations.
    • Can be used as a light source in a pinch.

Personal History:

Born in the suburbs of Braintree, Massachusetts in 1952- Jakob was raised by his birth parents Kayla and Joshua Barrett. Kayla was a nurse for a nearby hospital while Joshua was a demolitions expert. Did this influence Jakobs career choice later in life? Yes, yes it did.

Jakob was a sharp child, and was perhaps the definition of scary smart and scary curious. The kid was stealing textbooks from the study at the age of 5, a behavior his parents never bothered to discipline him for. Having been exposed to engineering and medical texts from an early age- Jakob was more than just well versed in the topics when he finally hit college. Having significant interest in both of the aforementioned subjects, Jakob decided to further his education in both.

So fast forward to Jakob, age 30. It's 1982. He's done the dance of medical school and residency. He's gotten his degree in mechanical engineering- and a very peculiar case has landed in his ER. A woman complaining of back pain- with no pulse. Now, common sense says that this result was horse shit. The woman was talking, fully conscious. She was responding to stimuli, but no matter where and how they checked- she had no pulse. Jakob was baffled out of his mind. Three different doctors had come in and not even they could find a pulse! No pulse and no breathing. No gastrointestinal sounds either! Just… faint ticking.

The X-rays were even more peculiar, the woman's internals were mechanical. Metal.

She was infected with the clockwork virus1.

As soon as X-ray imaging confirmed that this woman was, in fact, infected… in came the Foundation. The woman was taken in for containment and all those who came in contact with her were quarantined. Jakob was among the them.

From early 1982 to mid-1983, Jakob was locked in Foundation-monitored quarantine. As his colleagues started showing symptoms, Jakob did not. By July 1st, 1983- the three remaining doctors had shown no sign of the infection.

Somehow, they escaped it. How? Who knows, all they knew was that they were lucky as absolute sin.

Cleared from quarantine- they were offered positions within the Foundation. After all, why waste perfectly good medical staff? They were clearly careful, capable persons. They'd been exposed to the anomalous and handled it with careful and graceful professionalism.

Jakob has yet to forget about the woman who stepped into his ER and threw his life for a tailspin. Not for who she was, but for just what she represented. She was the unknown that he dreamed of as a child, living mechanics and systems that had only come to life through scratchy doodles in a long lost journal. That fascination still drives him, and with expertise in the subject of engineering and mechanics….

That is how Dr. Barrett became Epsilon-9's newest member.

Nova Friends "A cybernetic biblical Lazarus. Huh."
Celian Nighley Friends "He's quick as sin and hilarious. What else can I say?"
Avery Solace Friends "We understand one another."
Nathan Audley Acquaintances/Well-Respected "He's a capable and efficient kind of guy, kind of stuck up? He's no idiot."
Joshua Lee Acquaintances "I don't know him well."
Stephen Angelo Aquantences(?) "This guy is cute, and he's funny. I will not be making robotic honey badgers anytime soon though."
Eliza Angelo (?) "Stabbing someone? Things are getting interesting."
(NPC) Dr. Song Distrusted "I question his sanity. I question his thoughts. I question this mess."
Teo Ross Hated "This fucker is a theatrical fuck up."
A Short Collection of Kry's Favorite Jake Lines
  • "Back me up here- stepping up to Zeus and shouting 'Make like your daddy and swallow my babies' is the single greatest double entendre you could make at a God… Ever."
  • "…step up to God with a capital G and tell him Baldr did it better."
  • "I'm sorry, the Catholic [God]? That better be shit, because trashing an entire denomination is not something I want on a resume."

  • Nanopatches: Reverse-engineered from some nenotech lifted off Promethean Industries back in the ‘70s. These 2” square patches can corrode through most non-anomalous woods, plastics, and metals given enough time, self-destructing and rendering themselves inert after eating through a surface. Safeguards prevent them from going hog-wild on living organic matter, though you might be able to leave a nasty acid burn with one in a pinch. 3/run.
