Dr. Hershel Thorne

Player: War_

Position: Information Security and Cryptanalytics

Demeanor: Reserved and somewhat taciturn at first; much more spirited and cut-loose around the right people.

Nature: Pragmatic in his problem-solving, and a lot more down-to-earth than first impressions really give. Acknowledges that there’s a job to be done, but doesn’t see why some fun can’t be had in the process.

Description: Tall, with a lanky physique many find comparable to some sort of weed. Significant ‘coon eyes that are typical of the IT profession; eye colour is an odd amber hue. He has mid-length, wavy dark-brown hair that varies in style from ‘tied back’ to ‘totally unkempt’. His arms are decorated with various tattoos of geometric bands, eyes, teeth and tendrils; described as 'eldritch horror-esque' in appearance, anyone who knows him well enough will tell you they never stay consistent.
He tends towards wearing black cargo pants and a plain t-shirt, over which he wears his labcoat; steel-toe boots and any other necessary PPE complete the outfit.

Specialities
  • Copycat: 3. Anomalous. Being a relatively low-level parahuman, Thorne’s capabilities manifest as a form of shapeshifting; by carefully studying an individual he wishes to mimic, he can alter aspects of his form to resemble (or closely resemble) another person.
    • Anomalous Flaw: Liminality. Even Thorne's own supposed form is somewhat lacking in cohesion; he only looks like how he thinks he looks like, and thus his appearance is subject to influence by something even as simple as an offhand comment. States in which he is likely to have increased suggestibility, such as fatigue or sedation, exacerbate this effect.
  • Codebreak-and-Enter: 2. He's a computer scientist by trade, and one who happens to specialise in security. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that getting into things he shouldn't be able to is part of the deal. +2 [EDU:ENG] while trying to bypass electronic locking mechanisms, such as keypads, or when trying to bypass computer system security measures in order to access protected data.
  • The Sweeper: 3. What's the point in accessing all this data when you have to waste time sifting through all of it? That's when the Sweeper comes in - a nifty little program stored on an 800KB floppy disk, it acts as a system crawler and indexes whatever information it can pull from the directories it was targeted at. Effectiveness and compatibility may vary.

    • BASIC
    • Prolog
    • Pascal
    • C++
    • SQL
  • His PhD certificate, framed
  • An assortment of various clothes, most of which are casual

KNOWN HISTORY

CANDIDATE was initially acquired in 1955 following the capture of known Serpent’s Hand Persons of Interest, and the subsequent raid conducted on their facilities. CANDIDATE was declared ‘high risk’ with regards to potential, albeit at the time latent, parahuman capabilities; as such, CANDIDATE was fostered into the care of ex-operatives Michelle and David Thorne for monitoring in Rochester, England. CANDIDATE has no recollection of the events leading to, nor the circumstances of, this adoption.

CANDIDATE was a former student of the University of Cambridge from 1968 to 1973. This academic tenure was ended prematurely as it was discovered CANDIDATE’s capabilities were no longer latent, but active. The exact circumstances in which CANDIDATE’s capabilities began to manifest are unknown, however it is hypothesised to be a result of bodily maturation.

Given the circumstances in which these abilities were discovered, CANDIDATE was transferred to the nearest regional Foundation facility for evaluation. Deemed psychologically and physiologically viable for integration into the Bluebird Initiative, CANDIDATE was permitted to continue study; this period of study ended in 1979, at which point CANDIDATE was officially tenured as a Foundation operative.
CANDIDATE would later be assigned to Mobile Task Force Kappa-57 'Satellite City'; CANDIDATE's contributions to the task force has been deemed 'substantial', with sufficient records procured from CANDIDATE's last decade of service supplementing this.
In light of these circumstances, CANDIDATE has since been assigned to Site-15, Nevada, US, in order to continue service under Mobile Task Force Omega-5 'Classical Education'.

NOTES

CANDIDATE is required to attend biweekly physical examinations. Any indication of progression in CANDIDATE's condition is to be reported immediately.
Additionally, CANDIDATE is required to meet with a psychiatrist on a weekly basis for psychological evaluation and mental well-being.

Facts
  • Thorne's anomaly has resulted in a progressive connective tissue disorder; while it started as benign hypermobility, use of his anomaly in a particularly strenuous manner has worsened the condition over time to what's classed as a 'joint hypermobility disorder'. Chronic pain and frequent injury are but two of the myriad of symptoms that can occur - which often temporarily worsen after using his anomaly.
  • Through practice over time, he can use his anomaly to alter his tattoos or make them appear 'alive'; this serves no practical use, and it's more for his own amusement than anything else.
