Elijah Talridge

Basic Info:

Player: Fae

Position: Fireproof Cryptozoologist

Demeanor: Grouchy and standoffish. These traits are still there but far less noticeable when he's actually involved in his work.

Nature: Rather than help people learn from their mistakes, he's inclined to try to get them in a position where they can't make them in the first place. The grouchiness isn't an act persay, but it is rooted in concern, experience, and disillusionment more than anything else. Envies, pities, and holds in contempt idealists in roughly equal measures, though as he gets to know someone the measures are prone to shift.

Description: Talridge is pretty darn ugly. His face and upper torso are a mess of claw scars and small bitten-off bits. His nose and left ear both seem to be missing bits out of them, and his right eye droops some. He is also missing his right arm and walks with a limp, aided by a cane. His eyes are a dull grey-green, and he has flaxy brown hair with grey starting to show up in the temples.

  • Heir to the Firebird: 3. Long ago, Talridge made a bargain with a powerful and fiery entity for its boon and blessing. Some say it was a powerful ifrit, others a phoenix, still others the base elemental forms of fire and life, and most say nothing about it at all. Or maybe it wasn't actually Talridge, and it was really one of his ancestors who then passed the gift onto him. Or maybe it was both. Who knows?
    • Talridge is fireproof, with all the secondary immunities that entails. He takes no damage from flames, heat, smoke inhalation, or oxygen being consumed by nearby fire. These protections extend to his clothing ind equipment.
    • Whenever his physical or mental health reaches zero, Talridge dies and is reborn in fire. He is incapacitated for the rest of the run or event, but comes back at the end as what is basically a new character, with the following exceptions: he gets the same number of pointbuys before death and after, keeps his equipment, and rather than losing all his XP it is halved and rounded down. Talridge is unaware of this part of his anomaly when he starts.
    • An Illuminating Light: Talridge absolutely sucks at lying. In fact, it's hard for him to not tell the clear and possibly blunt truth, at least as he sees it. Talridge starts with a -3 in Bluff, which can still be raised by pointbuys but must always be reset to -3 f he dies and comes back.
  • The Fog of Ages: 4. Talridge knows bits of information that goes way back in time covering a variety of subjects. To be honest, he's not sure how far back some of it goes or how he knows it. Probably read it in a book somewhere. Talridge can roll this spec independently to gain relevant bits of historical or estoeric information or trivia relative to the current mission or situation once per run or event. Also, whoever is GMing something can hijack this spec to feed Talridge bits of information as a means of exposition.
  • Cryptozoologist: 3. Talridge is fascinated by and knowledgeable about animals and creatures that exist perfectly within the realm of nature but are still largely unknown to humans. Bonus to knowledge about cryptids, folklore, and species that are presumably imaginary or extinct.
  • Marred Image: 2. Talridge's scarring is pretty extensive, and isn't exactly easy on the eyes. While it makes it hard to avoid drawing attention, it doesn't make people inclined to want to interact with him or get involved in his business much. Bonus to intimidation when trying to get people to leave him along, avoid engaging him in two-way social interaction, or just getting them to let him do his own thing. This bonus goes away if he and the target exchange any meaningful conversation beyond 'weather talk' level.

Personal History:

Little is known of Talridge's childhood, but what is known is that he received his education at Boston starting in the year 1928. After this, he took to traveling the country, doing a dual job as a traveling reporter and writer for a small newspaper back where he grew up, and also as something of a traveling mythbuster, methodically disproving the existence of local haunts and monsters and other legends. As he went along, though, he couldn't hide that some of what he found reflected a grain of truth. This was enough to gain the attention of some of the right (or wrong, as the case may be) people. Among these were the blossoming Foundation, UIU, and MC&D, all of which found him valuable as a freelancer due to his knowledge. The UIU was actually the first to pick up on Talridge's heat resistance, and as such were willing to pay him a handsome sum to be part of an expedition into the Mt. Saint Hellenes crater in search of anomalies. He was quick to accept, and the mission went beautifully… at first. By the end, most of the team had fallen prey to the salamanders living in the volcano, which while they start the size of a small lizard, can apparently grow to resemble (flaming) komodo dragons. Though the encounter didn't kill him, it did significantly maim him. Seeing the opportunity to either capture another anomaly or enlist a valuable asset, the Foundation approached the recovering Talridge and offered him a job working for them. He accepted, and after sever years of work was attached in a surveying role to the Psi-7 Task Force.
