Elijah was born in 1895 in Houston, Texas. When he turned 10 he was sent to live with his uncle in Austin to learn a trade, undertaking. When he returned home in 1925 he started his own funeral home in a nearby town, which was moderately successful. While the Great Depression didn't affect him too much, a few years later the mass exodus caused by the Dust Bowl forced him to move shop.
During this time he traveled across America and performed funeral services for fellow travelers, often having to also figure out cause of death to give families closure. His picked up a lot of medical knowledge during this time by studying his uncle's old books. When he arrived in California he set up a mortuary with the money he had earned on the road, not only as a mortician but as a coroner as well. He became well known in the state as the top medical examiner.
Later on he became involved with some particularly gruesome deaths caused by an instance of SCP-████. Elijah provided valuable information to the Foundation that lead to the instance's containment. He was offered a job and he unhesitatingly accepted.
