Celian Nighley

A sketch of Celian, done by a willing on-site artist.

Player: Kade

Position: Consultant on the Disturbed.

Demeanor: While endlessly cordial and polite, it's not hard to notice there is something… off… about Celian Nighley. He's willing to play along well with others, is entirely amenable to following the leader, and will thank anyone who criticizes his methods with a chipper smile and well thought out response. And yet there is something about him that gets heckles rising.

Maybe it's because all his interests seem to be somehow connected to death, violence, and insanity. Maybe it's because the place he seems most at peace is when on a case, following in the wake of the torment and blood left behind by an anom on the loose. Or maybe it's because his chipper tone never changes, making it hard to tell if his comments involving murder or debauchery or other unnerving topics (slipped into conversations that are otherwise entirely mundane) are jokes or if he is entirely serious.

Whatever the reason may be, he's someone few people let their guard down around.

Nature: Much as he acts otherwise, Cel is as stable and nonviolent as a normal person. It's as the former sentence says- an act, one which he performs more out of personal amusement than any sort of insanity or need to make people fear him. Admittedly, he does find it to be a perk when people take any hint of supposed unhingedness to be a sign of lower intellect or higher likelihood of violence- it just goes to show how little the person understands about him and mental illness both.

While it's entirely true that many of his interests involve darker subjects and that he loves his job (fucked up and dangerous as it can get), his drive for these things comes from the eternal place of an outsider looking at something entirely novel and alien to himself, not because he actually thinks similarly to those who've jumped off the slippery slope a long time ago. Thus, his main experiences of near-lethal harm coming to someone are when he's the target of said harm, and his forays into the disturbed are those of an investigator trying to figure out that which was already set out before him instead of being the cause himself.

So yeah, he's kind of a troll, but never one who actually means harm.

Description: Cel is always… kind of a mess, but never enough that it gets in the way of his work. Dyed red-orange (but with his black roots showing some), Celian's hair seems to be in an eternal state of never having met a brush, but is still long enough to go a bit past his shoulders. Luckily though, his goggles (which he uses when observing particularly disgusting sights) are consistently resting on his head when not in use and push up all but his bangs so it ends a little under his (only slightly beardy) chin. And when needed fully out of the way, he ties the mess up easily enough in a sloppy bun.

Standing at 6'2", he tends to tower over others a little without meaning to, though he never intentionally points it out. His style seems to fall into two distinct categories; overly casual (hoodies, flannel, shorts small enough they could be mistaken for boxers, flip-flops, etc.) and messy business attire (thrown-on suit jacket over a slightly unbuttoned collared shirt, slacks with wrinkles covering nice leather shoes and mismatching socks, etc.). Suffice to say, the overly casual looks are mostly restricted to on-site only.

He can generally be seen with a calm and friendly grin on his face, no matter the circumstances.

Specialties
  • not Worth it: 2. There are some things that make folks an easier target to scare out of being use in battle. Much as he isn't actually one for violent or unhinged acts, Cel still can use acting in such a way to his advantage against such individuals. (+2 to Intim when an opponent has three of the following five traits:
  • 1) they have less than 3 determination,
  • 2) they are currently wounded,
  • 3) they are only connected to the objective/target by money,
  • 4) they have a large fear of death,
  • 5) they currently trust the PCs.
  • In such a case, Cel can roll Intim with this bonus, with them rolling antipsy in turn. should they fail, they take MHP damage equal to the difference between his Intim roll and their Antipsy roll.)
  • in the Eyes of Madness: 2. Many people tend to not notice or understand things because they are odd, or out of their frame of reference, or not something they'd think to look for. It's these things in particular that Celian excels at grasping. (+2 to Perc or Logic when the subject of interest is morally questionable, disgusting, disturbing, or generally hard for a sane person to grasp.)
  • the Chewbacca Defense: 2. At this point in our evolution, it's only natural for a human being to expect some sort of coherent response or defense when asked a question. This comes with the exploitable flaw of giving up when a person's reasoning doesn't even live in the same world as coherency. (+2 to Pers or Bluff when he brings up something in no way relating to the current topic to stall after being questioned by someone suspicious of him.)
  • can't Assimilate me: 1. As many have noted in the past, Celian has an especially bizarre personality. For whatever reason, not only does this make it hard for others to grasp him, this has also proven in the past to make him a much more difficult target for anomalies which try to consume and take over the will of their prey. (+1 Antipsy to any sort of hivemind or lotus-eater machine or body takeover scenario.)
  • the Backup Plan: 1. When he fails to unnerve folks properly though, at least he has his gun. (+1 Ranged when not Worth it fails.)

Gear:

  • a pistol (light weapon)
  • his goggles, of course, headlamp included which can be turned on as necessary
  • a notepad and pencil
  • VERITAS

Possessions:

  • pictures of mad scribblings and ominous doodles he appreciates
  • his odd wardrobe choices
  • many many notepads worth of his writing, mad-seeming and otherwise

Personal History:

Much like his personality, much of Celian Nighley's history can best be described as 'bizarre'. Born in an isolated little coast town that was outright hostile to strangers, he spent the first five years in his life watching the only people he knew personally trap tourists and sacrifice them to… something, which he never fully understood at the time, as he was rather young. Instead of breaking down and considering these actions normal, or having his sanity itself ripped away by this being that existed beyond the realm of human comprehension, his will was somehow strong enough to persist. He played into the role with lip-service and non-violent action when necessary, but was somehow able to realize this wasn't normal. And so, instead, he watched with a fascination born of being on the outside looking in, even as he could play his role well and confuse the others enough to slip away when he couldn't.

When he was around five years of age, for the first time tourists came along who were able to survive the town long enough to destroy many parts of it and escape, taking him with them. These, of course, were no ordinary tourists, but part of a fledgling group that dealt with the anomalous and were known simply as 'The Foundation'. It would have been entirely too easy to give him amnestics and send him off somewhere with an entirely fabricated backstory to live a normal life, but something about the boy gave those in charge pause.

This was a kid who, after being born and raised in a town which had frequent contact with eldritch beings which tended to make people crazed cult worshippers or insane asylum patients at best and helpless terrified sacrifices at worst, somehow came out rather unscathed physically and mentally. Something about Cel made it hard for his will to be crushed, destroyed, and consumed, it seemed. Alongside that, he was young enough that he had little idea the true scope of what had gone on and no one would believe him, aside. As such they came up with another plan to try out first- make him the youngest student on the roster at Brookridge Academy, to study what he saw fit.

And so, he studied what had been a part of his life for a long time; the dark, violent, disguisting, disturbed, and/or generally unhinged things a person can do and that can generally happen to them. He also took some courses in ranged weapons, just as a self-defense measure, but it was still mostly the terrifying and nightmarish and fear-inducing that grabbed his attention.

Loot

  • VERITAS: An improvement on 1950s Foundation tech, this VERITAS is more powerful than predecessors but also in the form of a hand-held counter rather than a head-mounted display. Can give readings of background levels of thaumic radiation (which, sadly, only covers a certain subsection of anomalies) and tell you if an EVE-manipulator is a reality warper, thaumaturge, or neither given a biological sample.
