  • I Speak For The Trees: 3. Oaks, pines, maples, sweetgums, aspens: if something has roots, a trunk and a crown; Bernard more than likely knows a fair bit about it. In fact, he'd be more than happy to talk your ear off about everything from forest management to the key differences between spruces and firs, so long as he has an audience willing to put up with it. +3 science boost on interactions involving forest ecology and botany.
  • Into The Wild: 3. Living conditions for those working in a hotshot crew can be…primitive. With fresh food, warm beds and even the most basic human luxuries being considered a scarcity during peak fire season, Bernard and his team were quick to learn how to make do with what nature had to offer. +3 boost to survival in wooded/forested areas
  • Beat The Heat: 3. Bernard's no stranger to hot climates. From grueling Colombian summers to impenetrable walls of wildfire flame and scorching charcoal, he's learned to live for the higher temperatures in life. Or at the very least, he's come to tolerate it more than most. +3 resilience against heat-based damage.

Personal History:

Born in Envigado, Colombia in 1946, Bernard was one of many children unlucky enough to grow up during the La Violencia conflict.

Now, spending ones childhood in the middle of a raging civil war would be considered a bad time by most, but in the case of Bernard and his family it was an exceptionally detrimental experience.

At the time, the Soto family held ownership of some of Antioquia Province's more prominent manufacturing facilities, delivering a small variety of goods to Colombia in exchange for providing a decent living for any and all operating under its roof. However, once the war began, certain guerilla factions saw the facilities simply as monuments to a corrupt regime that would be put to better use under their control. So, they sought to take it for themselves. On October of 1954 the Soto plants were captured, upon which all assets were seized and the plants were repurposed for ammunition assembly. To top it all off, Bernard's uncles who oversaw factory operations along with any employees who had tried to stop the guerillas were promptly killed during the conflict.

Fearing further attacks against his family, Bernard's father gathered what remained of his wealth and family, handed his factories over to the Colombian government and fled to New York City. From then, Bernard spent the remainder of his childhood learning the ups and downs of being American, primarily learning enough English to be enrolled into a school that wasn't run by an Abuela in some run-down apartment and receiving a proper education. Eventually Bernard was allowed to attend one of the local public schools in Brooklyn, where he quickly developed a love for science and nature.

After graduating high-school Bernard attended college, earned a degree in forestry and grew to work as a hotshot in Pennsylvania until 1974, where he then worked his way up the US forest service's chain of command until he became the area forester for Bucks County, PA. Bernard then spent the next several years overseeing forest health and management until an anomalous event occurred in the region, resulting in the loss of several thousand hectares of forest, 35 USFS employees and intervention by Foundation personnel.

For his cooperation with Foundation staff and contribution in suppressing and containing the anomaly, Bernard was offered a position at Site 15. He now works with MTF Delta-4 in the research of anomalous forestry and containment of any relating SCP materials.
