Bernard 'Benny' Soto

Player: War_

Position: Forensic Pathologist/Criminology Expert

Demeanor: Seems well-adjusted, if a little…strange, to some. First appearances show a mildly disjointed sense of empathy, which is often overcompensated for by his meekness.

Nature: Almost perpetually anxious or hyper-aware. Seems to be sincerely apologetic of his own behaviours, when made aware of them being an issue. He’s a regretfully blunt person at times, but finds it for the better in the long run; he’s more of a realist as opposed to an optimist, favouring the truth over something more sugar-coated.

Description: As mentioned prior, Benny is formidably tall - standing at 6’3, he towers over most, but somehow in the most unimposing manner possible.
Dark skin with patches of near-porcelain white; vitiligo, which is seen in majority on his hands, arms, legs, chest and face, and carries on into his hairline to create brilliant white ringlets against the rest of his dark hair.
Soft brown eyes framed with thick-rimmed, crooked glasses make him fit the bill of ‘nerdy scholar’; toned muscle and a strong, lean body reads ‘can probably hold his own in a fight’.
He tends to dress casually: a long-sleeved shirt with jeans or slacks when at work. Lab coat optional. Sweaters and cotton exercise pants when relaxing.

Specialties
  • Seasoned Criminologist: 3. Having majored in Forensics and Criminology, it's unsurprising that he knows how to best apply his knowledge. Used in lieu of [INT:LOG], +3 to [EDU:SCI] is instead rolled in investigative scenarios in order to link various pieces of evidence together into a whole, or to recognize a pattern in said evidence. Whatever amount of evidence is deemed sufficient is dictated by GM fiat.
  • Lookin’ For Clues, Gang: 3. Crime scenes vary, this much Benny knows - details can be small and obscure, or large and conspicuous. He's learned to work with both quite efficiently. +3 to [INT:PERC] when observing an area for anything out of place - this can include anything from scuff-marks to boot-prints, hastily-rearranged objects or poorly-concealed belongings.
  • Don't Hug Me I'm Scared: 2. Naturally being quite hypervigilant, survival is one of Benny’s most innate instincts. Knowing he’s thoroughly screwed (and for him, it’s much better to be safe rather than sorry), he will inevitably book it to save his own hide. +2 to [SPD:ACRO] when trying to avoid harm, be it for dodging attacks while making a getaway or simply trying to disengage through distance entirely.

  • A large array of clothing

Personal History:

Bernard William ‘Benny’ Soto (né Davidson) was born in 1954 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
When he was young - far too young to remember - he was orphaned, left by his mother at the doorstep of a preacher and his wife who just so happened to take him in.

The years spent with them proved it to be more of a misfortune than good fortune.

As a result of his…less than ideal home life, thrown together with derogatory remarks a-plenty over both his race and his vitiligo from his peers, Benny grew up an incredibly reclusive child who favoured his own company over that of others.
He was a bookish sort, even from a young age - science fascinated him, as did psychology - and his textbooks were blissful relief from whatever abuses he'd endure from those around him.
He was an incredibly bright child with a knack for most things logical, and his quiet nature meant his tutors suspected nothing of his tumultuous personal life.

At age 18, he finally made a bid for freedom from his home, stealing what money he could and praying his adoptive parents wouldn't come looking.

They didn't.

Changing his legal surname, he went about doing whatever he could to keep himself alive - taking what work he could to make sure he stayed fed and sheltered.
The process of enrolling in Hartford University came next, in 1974; he later went on to earn a degree in Forensic Sciences and Criminology.
This lead to the beginnings of a much more desirable career working with a civilian police investigations unit - initially as a paper-pusher, processing much of the documentation behind the cases they took on.

Even in his line of work he was considered fairly asocial by his coworkers, opting to spend his time cloistered away in his office - more than happy to shoulder the work of multiple people by himself, rather than enlisting in the help of his colleagues.
In spite of this, however, he was a notably proficient worker, and eventually his superiors saw fit to promote him to investigations - much to his chagrin.

Crime investigation, especially when you’re getting up close and personal with the aftermath, isn’t pretty.
And arguably, he saw many things no person ever really should.

The Foundation thought so, too.

1982 - The Blue Lady incident. Benny and his crew were the first investigators responding to the suicide of Ian Miles.
Not only knowledgeable of the item through obtained evidence from that investigation, Benny also became witness to one of his own crewmates becoming affected by the object. While the affected was taken in as a subject by the Foundation, Benny was assessed and verified to have not been exposed to the object’s effects - and, due to his knowledge and investigative abilities, was subsequently offered a position within their ranks instead.

Many months of mandatory training and introductions followed, and he was later assigned to Delta-4 ‘Blue Genes’ at Site-15.
