Aulis Leinonen

Basic Info:

Player: AxNinjaX

Position: Field Biologist and Geologist

Demeanor: Aulis, often affectionately referred to as "Aul," appears to be relaxed and easy-going. He never passes up an opportunity to crack a joke, and does his best to lighten moods and ease tensions. A sense of calm seems to radiate from his very person.

Nature: Aulis's laid-back exterior seems to contradict his almost obsessive attention to detail and dedication to his work. His cheerful disposition masks a solemn and thoughtful mind.

Description: With a gait that is at once soldierly and relaxed, Aulis is a reassuring presence. He walks with a barely noticeable limp as the result of injuries incurred during the Winter War. Often appearing in a casual shirt and pressed khakis, Aulis wears insulated military boots, in part because of their reasonable comfort, but also as a matter of habit. Cropped, dark-brown hair frames his angular face, and a sinewy strength is visible in his actions.

You have twelve points to distribute among as many or as few specialty skills as you see fit (but at least three is almost always warranted). Remember to explain what each specialty entails.

  • Unshakeable: 5. On top of already having a calm and controlled disposition, Aulis has been battle-hardened, and is accustomed to performing well under duress. He retains his focus and composure in chaotic situations and environments.
  • Stalker: 4. As a field biologist, Aulis often stalks animals to study them, and perhaps kill them, for science of course. He can be remarkably stealthy, especially in the outdoors, where he is familiar with using plants and landscapes for cover.
  • Sixth Sense: 3. Warfare and hunting have honed Aulis' senses. No, he doesn't have ESP. Rather, Aulis is far more likely to be aware when he is no longer the hunter, but the hunted. He is less vulnerable to ambushes, and more likely to perceive if he is being followed or watched.

Personal History:

Born Aulis Leinonen in the spring of 1920 in Jussarö, a mining town in Finland, Aulis emerged from the womb as the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics rose in the east. Being born to a mining family, Aulis was no stranger to dark caves and hard work; Aulis managed to get out of the worst of the hard labor in the town, though; at most, he would carry supplies to miners, especially his father.
His family managed to scrape together enough markkas to send Aulis to live with a distant uncle in Canada, where at age 8 he grew and learned in British Columbia. Aulis took an interest in the natural sciences, and spent his free time poring over biology textbooks and catalogs of minerals.

Shortly after enrolling in the University of British Columbia, where Aulis continued his studies as a biology major/geology minor, the Winter War between Finland and Russia broke out, in November of 1939. Fueled by ideas of justice, and driven by a thirst for adventure and a fair amount of passion for the country of his childhood, he left behind his Latin texts, taxidermied animals, and assortment of rocks to take up arms against the invading Soviets.

Aulis found himself pressed into service with the Finnish 5th Division, 13th Infantry Regiment (JR13). He found himself involved in a number of skirmishes and ambushes, and notably an action that cut off the road from Olonets to Petrozavodsk. This facilitated the Finnish capture of Nurmoyla, and the Soviets were forced to flee and abandon their equipment, including several T-26 light tanks. At this time, Aulis captured a Soviet officer, and to this day still possesses his uniform. However, this brief respite was interrupted by a counterattack by a small pocket of soldiers, and Aulis found himself and what was left of his squad pinned down. An abandoned T-26 found use again, but this time with Aulis in the gunner's position. He managed to fend off the Russian soldiers, but at no small cost; more than half of his squad laid dead, and most of the survivors were wounded, with Aulis himself receiving a shard of shrapnel in his leg. After being treated for his wound, Aulis decided to retire from service at the front and visit his hometown.

It became evident that things were not normal when smoke was visible from miles away. Aulis walked into what used to be his birthplace and his childhood, and gazed upon a scene that would befit the end of days. The coal mines burned endlessly, billowing smoke, as dust and debris blew through burned-out husks of houses. Twisted metal strewn across pockmarked roads and the rusting frame of a Russian bomber left little to the imagination. There was nothing here for Aulis, but before he left, he pocketed a fistful of ash.

By the end of the Winter War, Aulis had returned to Canada. The war effort called for all citizens to take up arms against the unrelenting machine of Facism, to defend the Free World for King and Country. But Aulis had already been deafened to these cries in Finland, and instead took to the vast and beautiful wilderness of Canada. He spent countless hours remembering the names of animals, their calls, and their behaviors. He studied semi-precious rocks, collected samples, and jotted down notes. For years, he tried to forget.

The Foundation found Aulis to be a potential candidate for recruitment, and eventually accepted him due to his extensive knowledge of biology and geology, along with his military experience. He found work in various labs analyzing tissue samples and minerals. Part of him longed to be in the field again, but not collecting samples.
